March 10 News

Message from Ms. Rached

I hope your conferences with your children’s teachers have been meaningful and productive this week! Our assembly on Tuesday, with the Michael Hearst ensemble, was enjoyed by all!

ESSA DESIGNATION

Each year, the state uses state testing data to rate schools. Our rating was just released - we received a designation of “Local Support and Improvement.” LSI is the best accountability status currently available - it used to be known as “in good standing.” While we are proud of the hard work of our teachers and students, we also recognize that standardized tests are but one measure of student progress, and that there are flaws and biases inherent in standardized tests.

Superintendent Town Hall

The March Superintendent Town Hall will be on March 15, 6:30-8:00 PM.

See here for the flyer.

March 3 News

Message from Ms. Rached

Welcome back from the break, and happy March! March is definitely coming in “like a lion” this year.

We had such a joyful African drumming assembly this week, which was a lovely way to bookend Black History Month. This morning, fifth graders hosted gallery walks in their classrooms, showcasing their Pueblo-inspired pottery for the families.

We are looking forward to parent-teacher conferences next Thursday. Student dismissal will be at 11:50 on Thursday. Besides conference day, we have designated Parent-Engagement time every Monday, from 8:00-8:30AM - you can request a phone call, Zoom, or in-person meeting with your child’s teachers during this time if you have questions or concerns.

Next week, we have an exciting performances by the author and musician Michael Hearst for all grades to look forward to. We are so grateful to the PTA for providing the funding for our engaging assemblies and extra programming!

LAST CALL FOR DONATIONS...SPRING AUCTION

Speaking of fundraising events – We need your donations for the Spring Auction & Raffle by Wednesday, March 8th or sooner! We are still collecting your donations of items or services to put up for bidding. It doesn’t have to be big or expensive, just something fun, something useful, something intriguing - if people would bid on it, we want it. And if you can help out the auction planning team with an hour or two of your time, even better! You can sign up to help and donate items or services through the same link.  Look out for an email next week with a link to the Auction & Raffle which opens online on RallyUp on Sunday, March 12!

SPRING AUCTION AFTER PARTY 🎉

celebrating Holi

The Hindu festival of Holi occurs on March 8. We will be moving our Holi celebration to early April, in hopes for more agreeable weather. Please read on to find out more about the meaning behind Holi, and check out some local Holi resources.

Holi is an ancient Hindu Indian festival and was originally called “Holika”

  • It is rooted in Hindu mythology and its meaning has evolved over time

    • It is linked to a symbolic Hindu legend of a demon king who was prevented from taking over the earth and this is how the festival came to be celebrated as the symbolic victory of good over evil.

    • While the celebration itself is based on a Hindu legend, the throwing of colored powder originates from a separate Hindu legend which immortalized the divine love between Krishna and Radha

    • Holi also signifies the official end of winter and gratitude for a good harvest

  • While Holi originated as a Hindu religious festival (the majority of India is Hindu), it is also celebrated by many other communities in India and is more cultural in significance for these communities (Sikhs, Jains etc)

  • So in summary, it is a joyful festival that celebrates happiness and love, the victory of good over evil, the beginning of spring which is a time of renewal and gratitude for a good harvest

  • The colors also have meaning:

    • Red symbolizes love and fertility

    • Yellow symbolizes happiness and peace

    • Blue symbolizes the Hindu God Krishna and calm

    • Green symbolizes nature and new beginnings/spring

    • Pink symbolizes youth and playfulness

    • Orange symbolizes courage and sacrifice

    • Purple symbolizes wealth and prosperity

  • Holi celebrations have spread all over the world in recent years and it is important to recognize the origins and why the festival is important to religious and secular Indians alike and honor these traditions
