A Note from Ms. Rached

School will be closed on Monday, January 16 in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. This is an opportunity to reflect on Dr. King and other civil rights leaders’ courageous leadership, and their dedication to fighting for equal rights and opportunities. To honor Dr. King and all who fought for civil rights, we will be launching our first-ever “MLK Week of Service” at PS 154. Students in every classroom will be participating in service projects planned by their teachers. This week, teachers have been reading our January Book of the Month, My Brother Martin (by Christine King Farris) to students, and students across the whole school contributed to our “Dreams for the Future” display.

Parenting Workshop

In addition to the new student support groups that we are planning, we are also gauging interest in parenting workshops. Please be on the lookout for a survey through Remind.

2023 Read-A-Thon: Let’s sweeten the deal

This week we launched our 2023 Read-A-Thon fundraiser. Monday, we sent home copies of the Read-A-Thon participants’ packet (PDF available here), but we still need everyone to register their kids on the website! RallyUp is helping us make collecting donations and tracking progress easier, all to make this the best Read-A-Thon ever.

There are prizes at the end of the month for individuals and classes, but let’s sweeten the deal now for everyone! Each class that has 18 kids registered on the website by Tuesday night will win a hot chocolate party for the whole class.

This will go a long way to getting us to our fundraising goal for the month: an average of $75/student to raise over $18k. We can hit that goal for the kids. In fact, how can we even afford the hot chocolate for all of you who are going to register by Tuesday? Let’s just say we’re definitely not laundering PTA money through Swiss Miss.

So lift a mug of chocolatey goodness to an inspiring month of reading, and, as a reminder, every kid who reaches their personal reading goal will be entered in a raffle to win a Terrace Books gift certificate! (There will be one winner per grade.) And the winning class will win a special class experience.

Get registered and get reading! Then get drinking!

January 6 News

A Note from Ms. Rached

Dear Families,

Happy New Year ! It has been such a joy to welcome our students back this week, and to visit them in their classes. Students have been talking and writing about their hopes and dreams for 2023, including “becoming a better reader”, “helping everybody”, and “making new friends”. The year has gotten off to such a great start, and I’m excited about all that is to come, including starting enrichment programming in all grades! This year, we will have enrichment music programming in all grades, though our partnership with Encore Outreach.

  • Kindergarten and 1st Grade: Music and Grooves

  • 2nd Grade: Humming Harmonicas

  • 3rd Grade: Buckets and Beats

  • 4th Grade: Ukeleles

  • 5th Grades: Vocal music

In addition music in all grades, we will also be starting grade-specific programming:

  • Kindergarten-3rd Grade: Chess

  • 4th Grade: Brooklyn Historical Society Partnership

  • 5th Grade: Ballroom Dancing, Brooklyn Museum of Art Partnership

This programming is entirely funded by the PTA. Thank you for supporting our PTA!!!

I wanted to give everyone an update about PE classes - our PE teacher, Ms. Donato, had knee surgery prior to the break, and will be our for 2-3 weeks as she recovers. We wish her all the best for her recovery! While she is out, on most days, students will have supervised outdoor free play during their PE periods. Mr. Buckley and I are enjoying having this opportunity to be outside with students!

In the new year, our school-based support team is in the planning stages of developing three new student-support groups.

  • Parent Loss Group

  • Adoption Group

  • Changing Families Group (for students who are going through changes in their family configuration)

These groups will be safe spaces for students to meet with other students and a qualified mental health practitioner. The goals for the groups will be tailored for each each group. These groups are dependent on family interest -  If you are interested in one of these groups for your child, please reach out to our social worker, Margie Dotter (mdotter@ps154.org).

Our best wishes for all of families in the New Year - as always, please reach out to me with any questions or concerns!

READ-A-THON!!!

We’re so excited to launch our 2023 Read-A-Thon fundraiser on January 9th!

Every kid who reaches their goal will be entered in a raffle to win a Terrace Books gift certificate! (There will be one winner per grade.) And the winning class will win a special class experience.

The Read-A-Thon is one of our biggest and most important fundraisers of the year.  This year we are hosting fundraising on a new platform which should make it VERY easy to share our fundraising appeal with your friends and family. Please do your part to get the word out and get the whole community involved! This year, we’re excited to be raising funds and logging books on our special Read-A-Thon website.

You can find a PDF of the Read-A-Thon packet here (hard copies will be sent home on Monday.

Members of the student action team formed a Reading Buddies Club. They will be reading to students in Kindergarten classrooms during their lunch period a few days each month. They have been having so much fun connecting with the students!

December 23 News

A message from Ms. Rached

And just like that… the holidays are here and we have some real winter weather! I hope everyone is staying safe, healthy, and warm!

We ended a fun-filled day today by learning about Jewish culture through music, with delightful and lively performances by the Brooklyn Klezmer Trio. What a perfect way to bookend such a wonderful year.

My warmest wishes to our 154 community during the holiday season. Whether you are traveling or staying local, I hope you have a chance to rest and recharge with those you hold dear. I’ll miss your fabulous children next week, and I’m sure they’ll seem 2 inches taller in 2023!

Happy holidays!

Leila ❤️

READ-A-THON

We’re so excited to launch our 2023 Read-A-Thon fundraiser on January 9th!

During the month of January (until January 31), our kids will be challenging themselves in a great month of reading while friends and family can pledge donations for reaching the student’s personal reading goal.

Like last year, students will work with their teachers to set a goal for the number of books they’d like to challenge themselves to read over a month. This has always been an important fundraiser for our school, so stay tuned for information on requesting donations from friends and family in recognition of your child’s efforts.

Every kid who reaches their goal will be entered in a raffle to win a Terrace Books gift certificate! (There will be one winner per grade.) And the winning class will win a special class experience.

This year, we’ll be logging progress and checking the leaderboard on our read-a-thon site. Exciting! Details will be coming soon and informational packets will come home in folders after the break, so be on the lookout.

But we’re not done yet. Back again as a part of the read-a-thon, the bookmark contest will tap our kids’ creative and interpretive talents and love of reading.

So stay tuned and start training those reading muscles for a great month filled with books (I hear carb-loading is essential).

We can’t wait to see what these amazing kids are able to accomplish!
