WINTER MOVIE NIGHT!

FRIDAY, DEC 13, 6:00

PS 154’s beloved movie series offers a cozy place for children and their adults to watch a movie together, with pizza, hot dogs, and snacks!

Please join us for some holiday cheer!  The PTA would like to thank each and every one of you for your amazing support throughout the year!  Please join us at this FREE holiday movie event. The PTA will be covering the cost of entrance for everyone, and concessions will still be available for purchase. Put on those PJs, grab a blanket, and get into the holiday spirit with us.

An added bonus to this movie night is there will be an art show on display that will feature work by Ms. Kelly's K & 1st grade students.  Art will be on display in the cafeteria.

Doors open at 6:00 — movie starts at 6:30!

CITY OF SCIENCE

Sunday, December 15th from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM at Park Slope Armory

The World Science Festival and Con Edison present our third annual CITY OF SCIENCE event, a FREE larger-than-life STEM exhibition that travels through the boroughs and is coming to BROOKLYN in December! We are reaching out to bring your school community to this exciting program that will unleash every child's inner scientist.

  • Walk on water, blast balls into orbit, and explore the inner workings of the human brain. Our activity partners will demonstrate the power of STEM to kids of all ages with interactive exhibits and hands-on activities – watch us in action here!

RVSP is encouraged, but not required.

2020 Critically Conscious Educators Rising Series!

Parents/Guardians-   Please take a look at the learning opportunity below. One of the facilitators, Ana Catalina Duque, is also collaborating with our school's Equity team. 

Hello Parents/Guardians -

We are so excited to offer a parent/guardian cohort in the 2020 Critically Conscious Educators Rising Series! In line with the NYC Department of Education's commitment to promoting equity and racial justice, we invite parents/guardians as stakeholders to be a part of the conversation.

This cohort will be specifically focused on bringing together a critical mass of parents/guardians in 7 monthly sessions to focus on exploring questions together: in what ways must schools educate and honor the whole child? What does culturally responsive-sustaining education require of us?

Dates are the following and all sessions are from 5pm to 8pm. Location TBA.

CCER (Critically Conscious Educators Rising Series) objectives are to engage in a deep analysis of equity research and to develop an equity, racially just lens when crafting culturally responsive lessons. Who in turn will share information within their individual spheres of influence. At the close of the series, participants will have the opportunity to present at the 2020 Decolonizing Education Conference!

Kolot is hosting a community information night about volunteer opportunities with and ways to support groups working to protect immigrants and refugees this Monday night. Find the Facebook link here: Invite

The groups presenting will be Never Again Action, New York Immigration Coalition, Ruth's Refuge, New York Immigrant Freedom Fund (Brooklyn Community Bail Fund), and ICE out of Sunset Park rapid response group from the office of Congresswoman Nydia Velsquez. Attendees will have a chance to talk with them in small groups.

It is a potluck vegetarian dinner followed by the program.

This book club will serve as a safe, supportive discussion space for parents to learn new parenting philosophies and tools, and to share their parenting challenges and successes within the context of a chosen book. Participants will share a common desire to learn and possibly practice new ways to improve their relationships with their children. The books chosen will be aligned with the mission of the PS 154 SEL Committee: to support the social and emotional learning of our children and of those who teach and care for them.

SCHOOLYARD POLICY REMINDER

NO dogs in the schoolyard (no matter how sweet they are).


Parent Teacher Conferences - November 14

Report cards will be distributed on Wednesday, November 13, 2019, for children in grades 1-5.  Progress reports for children in kindergarten will be given out on Wednesday, November 13, 2019.  Please review the report card or progress report and discuss it with your child. Below are the times that Parent-Teacher Conferences have been scheduled for the fall term.  Please note that afternoon and evening conferences will be held on one day, Thursday, November 14, 2019.* We encourage all parents to meet with their child’s teacher to discuss any academic concerns you may have. Please note the date and times on your calendar and plan to attend.  

Afternoon: 12:30pm - 2:30pm

Evening:     4:30pm - 7:30 pm

Due to the afternoon conferences, children in grades K through 5 will have a half-day of school on Thursday, November 14, 2019. Dismissal will be at 11:30 am. Lunch will be served.

Letters will go home in backpacks on Monday and you will be able to indicate if you need an afternoon or evening appointment. Your teacher will send home your scheduled time once you return the tear-off sheet from the letter.

*Fifth grade teachers will send out a separate form with different times.


Supporting Immigrant Families

The Department of Education (DOE) and the Mayor’s Office are committed to protecting the right of every student to attend public school, regardless of immigration status, national origin, or religion. The United States Supreme Court has also recognized the importance of public education for all students, including undocumented students.

Community Safety Info

Important Safety Updates

Our local NYPD precinct has alerted us about two safety issues to be aware of. 

  1. There has been in increase in thefts of iPhone wireless ear buds.

    • 2 to 3 males.

    • Approximate age in their mid-teens.

    • In most cases, at least one perpetrator is using a scooter.

  2. Recently, some middle school girls have reported that an individual is exposing himself as the students walk from their local schools.

Please see the letter from District 15 Superintendent Anita Skop (linked here) on the SubDistrict 3 Elementary School Rezoning and plans to engage the community further. While this does not apply to PS 154, it is good information to have. Zoning conversations will continue on November 19 at the CEC15 Meeting. Please save the date.

WOMEN IN BUSINESS

Monday, Nov 4, 5:00-8:00PM

Join Chase for an opportunity to network with — and learn from — other women in business. This event will feature a panel conversation of notable women leaders, who will discuss the successes and challenges they’ve faced over the course of building their careers and growing their businesses.

Following the panel discussion, stick around for a networking reception and an opportunity to receive 1:1 business consultations from The Acceleration Project. Beverages and hors d’oeuvres will be served. Free; registration required.

VOTE!

Tuesday, Nov 5 (early voting: Oct 26-Nov 3)

Election Day in New York City is November 5, and all registered voters in the city are eligible to participate. For the first time, voters can participate in early voting from October 26–November 3, at select polling sites.  More information, including a guide to what is on the ballot, is available at voting.nyc. (A letter went home in backpacks too.)
