It’s Giving Tuesday — Let’s Make an Impact!

Hi PS 154 Families,

As we head into this season of giving, I wanted to take a moment to share an update on our PTA’s fundraising efforts. First, thank you to everyone who has already contributed to our Annual Fund—it’s because of your support that we’ve raised $20,000 so far! But with a goal of $125,000, we still have a ways to go, and I know we can do it together.

Today is Giving Tuesday, a global day of generosity celebrated on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. It’s an opportunity for people around the world to come together and make a positive impact by giving back to causes they care about. For us, the charity that supports PS 154, it’s the perfect moment to rally together and support the amazing programs that make our school so special.

To reach our Annual Fund goal, we’re aiming to raise about $400 per student for our Annual Fund. That’s just $40 per month—or $10 per week! Your contribution will help fund vital programs like art, music, technology, and extra classroom support that make a world of difference in our children’s education.

Here’s how you can pitch in:

  1. Make a Donation: Visit ps154.org/donate to make a one-time gift or set up a recurring monthly donation. $40 a month adds up quickly and makes a big impact!

  2. Stock Donations: Have some appreciated stocks? Donating them is a great way to give while possibly saving on taxes. Visit https://donatestock.com/pta-of-ps154-brooklyn-inc for more information how to do this.

  3. Employer Matching: Many employers match charitable gifts—it’s an easy way to double your impact. Please check with your employer on how to do this.

  4. Spread the Word: Share our Giving Tuesday campaign with friends, family, and neighbors who might want to support our amazing school.

Every bit helps us get closer to our goal. Whether you can give $4, $400, or more, your generosity ensures that our kids have the enriching experiences they deserve—and helps build a stronger school community.

If you have questions or want to chat about other ways to support, feel free to email me anytime at pta_fundraising@ps154.org. Thank you for being such an important part of PS 154!

Warmly,
Jimmy Schementi
Chair of Fundraising, PTA of PS 154 Brooklyn

School Wide Lice Check

We hope everyone had a good holiday break! In an effort to minimize the spread of lice upon return to school, the PTA organized a school-wide lice check for this Thursday, in partnership with Lice Free Noggins. They will check every child’s hair unless your family opts out of the check using the form below. If your child’s hair is braided, please talk to your child in the morning about whether they should tell the technician to leave the braid in or unbraid it to check. We ask that families who can submit $5/student (those who would like can donate more) for these professional lice checks. You can submit payment here. Note: Payment is not required for the lice check to be completed; families who are not able to contribute will not be excluded from the lice check.

In accordance with DOE policy, any child with live lice will be sent home. Any child with nits (lice eggs) will not be sent home, but their family will be notified. The more families we have participating in this lice check, the more effective it will be. If you need to opt your child out of the lice check, please complete this form.

As a reminder, there is no shame in getting lice - it's a part of the elementary school experience. If you identify lice in your child's hair prior to this Thursday's check, please follow the lice check protocol outlined here, and report the case to Tanica and your teacher through Parent Square. Reporting cases of lice is extremely important to help stop the spread, and information will be kept completely confidential.

Finally, PTA has also put together a “Lice Advice” one-pager with some helpful tips and resources. Please read through this document to understand how to handle cases of lice (spoiler alert - lice shampoos don't work).

Thank you for your help in working together to successfully contain and stop the spread of lice around our school!
