A Note from Principal Fitzgerald

Dear P.S. 154 Families,

Picture day was such a joyful way to return from our 4 day weekend! It was wonderful getting to see all the students in the outfits that make them feel most confident. If you missed picture day don’t worry make ups will happen November 22nd. We would love to be able to share some of the adorable and hilarious pictures with families via ParentSquare but we need your help! Please make sure you have filled out the media release form indicating your families preference so we can begin sharing pictures of all the amazing learning students are engaged in.

Looking forward to seeing some of you at movie night on Friday!

C-30 Process Community Input Survey

PS 154 is embarking on the DOE Superintendent-led Principal selection process, also known as the C-30. Superintendent Alvarez is committed to maximizing community participation in in this important hiring decision.  As such we are seeking input from the school community on any selection criteria you believe is important for this role as well as on any proposed interview questions.

Please respond to this survey no later than Friday, October 18th.

This is a free event and a wonderful opportunity to build community. Events like this are made possible through the support of parent volunteers, so please consider signing up to help!

Book Market Kicks off 10/21

Book Market will be kicking off next week (October 21) for all classes!

What is the Book Market Committee?

Several years ago, parents came together to create PS 154's Book Market, which you may have seen housed on the MMR stage. The Book Market provides students with added opportunities to engage with books of their choosing. Each class is given a designated visiting slot about 1x/month and students are allowed to take home several books each visit. They can use it like a library (eg return the books) or keep the books at home. Every class will have its first visit the week of Oct 22!

How Can You Help?

1. Volunteer! We need a class librarian and class helpers to support this effort. The Class Librarian ensures that they or another parent volunteer is present at each class Book Market visit to supervise, support the kids to pick out new books, and clean up the shelves afterwards. Librarians and Volunteers will also help keep the Book Market in good shape including sorting and shelving books, and brainstorming ways to improve the Market along with the other volunteers. Please sign up here ASAP if you can help! We will have a short, recorded zoom orientation Oct 14th at 8pm, for those who sign up. We’ll share the recording with everyone who cannot make it.

2. Donate! Keep an eye in the newsletter for donation requests. Right now we are only taking graphic novels! We will let you know when that changes! As a  reminder, we only accept books in great condition, and we do not accept board books, religious books, or workbooks. Please donate those elsewhere as we have minimal capacity for sorting and rehousing.

Questions? Please email Sabrina, mom to Mirele, 4th grade, at sabrinabaronberg@gmail.com

D15 PTA Fun Run

The Office of Council Member Shahana Hanif and the President’s Council of District 15 are hosting the 16th Annual Fun Run on Saturday, October 26, 2024 at the Lefrak Center in Prospect Park (9 am bib pickup, 10 am race start).

The Brooklyn PTA Fun Run is a family-friendly event where Brooklyn PTAs and community members of all ages come together to run/bike/scoot/walk around Prospect Park loop road (approximately 3.3 miles). The goal of the Fun Run is to raise PTA funds for Brooklyn schools with Title I status in the last three years (i.e. 60% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch).

Every dollar raised by the PS 154 team will help grow the pot of funds for redistribution to Title I schools in Brooklyn. These flexible funds are critical for schools to be able to pay for services like recess staff, extracurriculars like gardening and musicals, and teacher grants. Let’s show the D15 community our solidarity by raising much needed funds for their PTAs and students. Join the PS 154 team and REGISTER HERE

Community Corner - Park Slope Talent Show

There are so many talented kids in the area and just not enough stage time to go around.  As a result, a group of Park Slope Families are partnering with Camp Friendship (339 8th Street, Park Slope) to host a talent show to provide an additional opportunity for kids to rock out with their band, play a solo, sing a song they wrote, sing any song, recite a poem they wrote, perform a short skit, juggle, etc., on Saturday November 23 at 3:00 pm.

There is no participation fee, tryout, or judges.  We are asking each participant to bring an unwrapped gift for a child of their age and 2 items from Camp Friendship's Most Needed Pantry Items.   If you'd like to make a donation to Camp Friendship that would also be appreciated.  Here is a link to their donation page.
