We have reimagined the Science Fair as the Virtual STEAM Fair. Check out our information page on the P.S. 154 website, providing details of the Virtual STEAM Fair and sign up HERE. You can also go directly to the P.S. 154 Shop to purchase kits before Monday, March 1. After purchasing your kits, you will receive further instructions and information on distribution of materials. PANDEMIC-EBT FOOD BENEFITS

What you need to know about the P-EBT food benefit for NYC students, as of February 10, 2021

  • The $420 food benefit for spring 2020 has been distributed to all NYC public school students. 

  • If you have not received the spring 2020 benefit, click here (bit.ly/PEBTcontactform) to contact the State, and send an email to info@foodadvocates.org

  •  It is anticipated that P-EBT food benefits for the 2020-2021 school year will be issued to eligible children no sooner than March 2021, this and more information can be found on the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance website

  • Please continue to visit https://otda.ny.gov/SNAP-COVID-19 for the most up to date information. You can also find additional information on what the Pandemic EBT food benefit is and who is eligible here

  • All families must complete the Family Income Inquiry Form, which helps schools receive money for their programs. This is the lunch form, but even if you do not receive school lunch, you still need to complete the form. 

  • Zoom difficulties? Please reach out to Ms. Rached (lrached@ps154.org) with any issues joining Zoom meetings. This is a much faster way to get support than posting to the class stream.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

As the weather improves, the After School program is able to make the most of the school yard with a variety of activities. This week, street hockey has been a big hit with the kids! There are still spots available for Hybrid Students on the days that they attend school. If Remote Learners are interested in meeting up with their friends in a familiar and safe setting, please consider signing them up for Outdoor Play and Flag Football. There are also some open slots in virtual clubs including Online Cartooning and Online Chess. We are giving families extra time to count up reading minutes, collect sponsorships and donation money and help us reach our goal of $15K. PLEASE SUBMIT ALL COMPLETED FORMS & DONATIONS BY MIDNIGHT, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 26:

  • Please email both COMPLETED READING LOGS and PLEDGE FORMS to readathon@ps154.org

  • You have two options to donate:

    • Ask family and friends to donate their money and it will be allocated to your child’s collection. They can click on the SPONSOR A READER button at https://www.ps154.org/readathon-2021

    • Collect all the money from friends and family and submit the total amount by February 26 by clicking on the link below.

We can only accept online donations this year due to COVID-19.

WINNERS WILL BE ANNOUNCED WEEK OF MARCH 1. Each child that reads the most in his or her grade will receive a gift certificate to Terrace Books, and each grade's class that collectively read the most will get a special reading session with our own Principal Foreman.


COMMUNITY CORNER

Our children have spent much of the last month at school learning about well known black icons, as well as less recognized figures that deserve to have their stories told during Black History Month. Please encourage your children to continue exploring through books, events and online material to keep growing their social awareness. This is the last chance to see Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM)  35th Annual Brooklyn Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. which is available to enjoy for free online through Sunday, February 28. Alicia Garza, the author of The Purpose of Power and co-founder of the Black Lives Matter Global Movement, gave the keynote address along with performances by PJ Morton, Tarriona “Tank” Ball, Sing Harlem!, poets Timothy DuWhite and Ashley August, and others.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

Last week’s vote to provide the After School program with a $20K loan was a temporary solution to help it survive. However, high enrollment numbers are the best way for us to keep After School financially stable. Please consider signing up. Cohort Students can attend on the days that they are in school. Remote Learners can sign up for Outdoor Play and Flag Football. There are also open slots in Online Cartooning and Online Chess Clubs. BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Throughout this month, the Equity Committee and PTA are teaming up to bring as many resources as possible to expand your children’s knowledge of Black Lives Matter and Black History Month, both the notable and lesser known figures that deserve recognition. This month, the Equity Committee has recommended resources for use in school, as well as information about NYC-wide initiatives to participate in. The PTA has provided further reading lists and links to black-owned bookstores. This week, Theater teacher, Mr. Casey talks to his classes about Misty Copeland, the American Ballet Theater's first female African-American principal dancer through her book, Firebird.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM BUDGET VOTE

We will be reviewing and voting on a change in the budget to assist in keeping our After School program running.This special meeting is being held in accordance with our bylaws and should take less than 10 minutes. Please join us if you can. Additionally, please consider enrolling your children in our After School program. High enrollment numbers are the very best thing we can do to keep the program financially stable. Due to the current climate of our country, the program is taking a substantial hit and it is important to note that in the past, After School has funded an Academic Coach for the school as well as contributed $24k to our Makers Space program in 2019.

It’s not too late to participate in the Annual P.S. 154 READ-A-THON, which is underway, and runs through to Valentine’s Day, February 14th. To participate, there are three steps:

Step 1: Download the reading packet with all the information and forms you need from https://www.ps154.org/readathon-2021. Your child needs to keep a Reading Log of time they read in school and time they read out of school every day until SUNDAY FEBRUARY 14.

Step 2: Encourage family members and friends to sponsor your child for each minute they read on the Pledge Form. You can donate sponsorship money at any time during READ-A-THON, or at the end by clicking the SPONSOR A READER button at https://www.ps154.org/readathon-2021. (We can only accept online donations this year due to COVID-19.)

Step 3: Add up your child’s minutes and the total amount raised and send both your Completed Reading Log and Completed Pledge Form to readathon@ps154.org. ALL forms and donations must be received by SUNDAY FEBRUARY 21.

Each child that reads the most in his or her grade will receive a gift certificate to Terrace Books, and each grade's class that collectively read the most will get a special reading session with our own Principal Foreman. Please ask family and friends to sponsor your child’s reading per minute or make a fixed donation.


BOOKMARK DESIGN CONTEST

Friday, January 15 - Sunday February 14

Enzo won the Bookmark Design Contest last year when he was in 1st Grade. He discusses his enjoyment of both the READ-A-THON and the Bookmark Design Contest, It could be you, this year! One winner is selected from each grade based on how their design shows what their love of books and reading means to them. Every child in each grade will receive a copy of the winning bookmark. Make sure you have the NYC Schools Account

NYC Schools Account (NYCSA) is a DOE application that lets you access important information about your child on any device. The website is accessible in nine languages.

Why is the NYC Schools Account important?

The NYC Schools Account allows you to view your child’s grades, report cards, attendance history, test scores, transportation information, IEP information, submit COVID consent forms, track your child’s progress to graduation, and more to come!

This year, a NYC Schools Account is the only way to apply and vote in the 2021 Education Council Elections.

    All families can continue to go to any school building (9:00 AM-12 PM on weekdays) to pick up three free grab-and-go meals. No identification or registration is necessary. Halal and kosher meals are available at some sites.

THE 2021 P.S. 154 READ-A-THON

Friday, January 15 - Sunday, February 14

We’ve had a few questions about the Annual P.S. 154 READ-A-THON, which is underway, and runs through to Valentine’s Day, February 14th. Over the course of the next week, we are going to share with you some photos, quotes, and videos from past winners about why this is such a great activity! How can we take part? Download the reading packet with all the information and forms you need from https://www.ps154.org/readathon-2021. Your child needs to keep a Reading Log of time they read in school and time they read out of school every day until SUNDAY FEBRUARY 14.

How do I sponsor a child? Encourage family members and friends to sponsor your child for each minute they read on the Pledge Form. ALL forms and donations must be received by SUNDAY FEBRUARY 21. You can donate sponsorship money at any time during READ-A-THON, or at the end by clicking the SPONSOR A READER button on the website: https://www.ps154.org/readathon-2021.

How do we enter? Add up your child’s minutes and the total amount raised and send both your Completed Reading Log and Completed Pledge Form to readathon@ps154.org by SUNDAY FEBRUARY 21.

Each child that reads the most in his or her grade will receive a gift certificate to Terrace Books, and each grade's class that collectively read the most will get a special reading session with our own Principal Foreman. Please ask family and friends to sponsor your child’s reading per minute or make a fixed donation. (We can only accept online donations this year due to COVID-19.)


BOOKMARK DESIGN CONTEST

Friday, January 15 - Sunday February 14

Our youngest Bookmark Design Contest Winner, Galiana Jones, who earned the accolade last year in kindergarten, talks about the joys of taking part in both the READ-A-THON and Bookmark Design Contest, Be inspired, get creative! One winner is selected from each grade based on how their design shows what their love of books and reading means to them. Every child in each grade will receive a copy of the winning bookmark. We are planning a P.S. 154 Scavenger Hunt for the Spring Break. We would love to team up with local businesses to combine finding clues with shopping/eating opportunities.
